Living Roof Cellar

Naturally Cool Since 1984

In the world of wine, caves are cool, figuratively and literally.

When Doug and Lee were planning a winery building back in the ’80s, they wanted caves. But due to site limitations, a grade level building was the only feasible choice.

No problem!

Construct a half cylinder, some retaining walls and cover it with three to six feet of dirt.  Add rosemary for ground cover to serve as erosion control, and a living roof cellar was completed.

Our non conventional living roof cellar, a.k.a. above-ground cave, is a peaceful place to age wine with zero heating or cooling requirements.

An added bonus, the bees love when the 300 rosemary plants are in bloom!

We encourage you to visit our one-of-a-kind living roof cellar, and enjoy our wines as well as the picnic spot, horseshoe pit and petanque court.

Naturally Cool Since 1984

“They even designed their storage cellar to be environmentally friendly before being green was cool – the roof of the cave is made up of rosemary bushes for built-in cooling!”
