Paul Draper, the winemaker at Ridge says, "Ripeness and when to pick are the most difficult issues with Zinfandel. You don't want to pick before the flavors are there, but you don't want to let the fruit overripen. In many years Zinfandel can move from ripe to overripe in a couple of days." Overripe grapes make high-alcohol wines. Of the 125 wine we tried, only three of the top wines were 14 percent or under: Frog's Leap 2002, Nalle Dry Creek Valley 2004, and Ridge Three Valleys 2003.
